Music

George McCracken leads our senior choir. His wife, Helen McCracken, serves as our church organist. Both have extensive professional musical experience.

The choir normally consists of six to twelve members who sing at most Sunday morning services, leading the singing of hymns and usually singing an anthem. The choir usually practices on Tuesday nights and prior to the Sunday morning service.

During the past several years, the choir has also sung a choral evensong service in the spring, and a concert preceding the Christmas Eve service. The focus of the choir is on “classical” church music.

The choir also forms the core of the West Point Singers’ Guild, an interdenominational choral group that performs one or two times a year with a major music performance from the classical canon, such as Handel’s Messiah, Vivaldi’s Gloria and Fauré’s Requiem. Several Singers’ Guild performances have been held at Old St. John’s.

A junior choir, led by Jane Mason, has been active with six to twelve young people, who sing during the Sunday morning service monthly, as well as for several of the special services.
